Had an awesome weekend with Karen (biting Justin's choice of hot-spots in NYC, be damned - I'll get into that later) and Tom Caldwell who also happened to be in tha citaaay. Let's just say it was from one good food experience to another: we began with a light lunch at Amsterdam Tapas, a neat little resto near my place - mushroom ravioli & crab cakes. Then we strolled through Central Park on a beautiful autumn day to the Met Museum, cuz I knew Karen would love it - loads of Greek & Roman sculptures, Renaissance art, a dash of modern. But the highlight was having afternoon tea in the Petrie Court Cafe. We went all out - 3 tiers of scones, miniature cakes, smoked salmon pinwheels, jams & butter, and English tea, of course. It was *lovely* :) you shoulda seen me, Karen was laughing at how giddy I was.We took a walk down 5th Ave., met up with Tom & his friend Amanda of London UK, & decided on this Thai restaurant that turned out to be a terrific find: cozy, busy, authentic stuff, while Karen got a little drunk on the white wine we had and we debated Batman's nipples (long story) & bygone food habits (Karen's pasta & ketchup... hahaha) & how SO many seinfeld episodes are relevant to life here. We did the walk-around Times Sq and the essential Toys R’ Us visit, which is always fun after you’ve had a little to drink.
On Saturday we met up for lunch with the LLM crew – Constance, Wendy, Faisal, & Kelvin – post their Bar Exam (Part 1), for Szechuan food near Times Square.
Karen & I hit up the Museum of Art & Design, which had this quirky ‘Droog’ gallery on: furniture with irony, if you will – my favourite was this wooden high chair that came with a saw cuz it’s adjustable – the bigger the child, the shorter the high chair needs to be (for the child to be eye-level with adults), and the chair that had one leg significantly shorter, so it can double as a paperweight for books. ok, you had to be there, but you get the idea. The famed MOMA was next – with the Pollock, the (couple) Picassos, the Warhol (Campbell’s soup cans, of course). it can be pretty overwhelming, when you see those paintings you studied for so long. Karen’s into art history & draws a bit herself so she knows all about this. After this we headed to Macy’s and unceremoniously fell asleep (!) in an au bon pain (chain of coffee shops in NYC) – haha we were both so tired we just dropped off. in the middle of Macy’s! hahaha
we had a mélange of street food – nuts, pretzels, a black & white cookie (which Karen was unnaturally happy about ;)), then met up with Tom & Amanda for Dizzy’s club, the jazz bar Justin & I went to before. the music was amazing – first a quintet, which ended off with a gospel Amazing Grace/How Great Thou Art number, then a latin jazz band which took the stage by storm, such energetic bongos/brass/cowbell! music. everyone enjoyed themselves immensely - I especially, cuz i ordered fried chicken & mac n' cheese (it's ssooooo good) - we got home at 3.
Finally! a required-eating visit to Bouchon Bakery, highly recommended by our great friend Clement (he’s a crazy chef: http://www.alacuisine.org) and of course their sandwiches are always excellent. we indulged in a little lemon tart & bought macaroons to bring back to TO and I swear Karen didn’t want to leave, haha.
